We begin with a concert for all of the students participating in the workshop. Using drumming
and singing as well as story, we will state our intentions for our time together. For this purpose a traditional Cherokee blessing song will be sung to the directions and the story fires will be kindled in each of us. Within this time I will tell some of the stories that we will use in our workshops. To learn to read and write, students must develop a good oral language base, yet the skills involved in talking and listening are rarely taught. These skills are an inherent part of storytelling. The students will develop fluency and confidence in their oral language abilities. They will also learn active and attentive listening skills and visual communication skills. Public speaking skills at an appropriate level will be focused upon. At the end of our time together we will have our new tellers in concert for the school. The story fires will burn brightly as we come together one last time. Again the drum will beat and songs of gratitude will be sung and perhaps if such stories have been chosen, we will dance. |
